01 12 2007 Chelsea 1 West Ham 0
Having missed the Rosenborg match due to work (£160 down the bog for nothing) I was pleasantly surprised watching
the game down the pub to see Chelsea put in one of their most attacking performances this season. 4-0 could have
reached double figures - Drogba was magnificent. We have qualified and can now concentrate on the league until the
next round of the Champions League.
As is often the case, when you play a mediocre team and annihilate them, you tend to find it difficult to step up your
game when you play harder opposition in your next match. This was certainly the case against West Ham, and the first
half was one of the worst I have seen in the last few years. Sky scheduling the kick of for 12.45 certainly did not help -
the crowd looked as asleep as the players.
West Ham are not a bad side, but do not possess that quality that can test the big sides. They had several opportunities
to score, but could not make the most out of them. It was good to see Carlton "Bruno" Cole back, although he and Scott
Parker did nothing to make me regret that we sold them, especially when you look at another strong Drogba
performance. The negatives were another average Sidwell performance, and Mikel yet again making a stupid tackle that
could have earned him a red card.
The second half began brightly, and it was obvious the Chelsea players had received a bit of a kick up the bum at half
time. The team lacked width, and it was only when SWP came on that we began to look more dangerous.
Joe Cole finally got us the winner which on balance we deserved. This was not one of our prettier matches, but another
three points in the bag. Sunderland next Saturday should ensure another three points: we are on a good run, but in the
league we have not really been on fire the last few games.
