07 07 2007 Trip to Sardinia & Cagliari stadium
A well deserved rest in the beautiful Chia in Sardinia.
And the missus was good enough to let me drive the 50km or so to Cagliari to go and see the stadium where the
legendary Gianfranco Zola played after he sadly parted company with the Blues.
It was yet another bizarre decrepit European stadium which would have had the health and safety saddos in the UK
foaming at the mouth, but boy did I love it. It is an oval bowl shape with a running track (and of course only one roof over
the directors' end) BUT they have had to install temporary seating onto the running track as the real stadium is falling
apart!

The stadium is located in a concrete wasteland just off a motorway that leads to the airport and bypasses the edge of
the city. Cagliari is a port town and the area surrounding the football club is very poor. Compared with the rest of
Sardinia the town itself is not picturesque.
The biggest disappointment was going all that way and finding out there was no Zola memorabilia for sale in the club
shop (which was half the size of the one we had in the 80s). However, the little man's presence was well felt. He appears
on many adverts and billboards - I even saw one from him urging people to donate blood!
My favourite part of the stadium was the away end which has a wire mesh above it to protect visitors from flying objects!

Would you trust standing on a

to make about my season ticket seat....

So when is this "Italia '90" starting then?
Surprisingly, Cagliari won the Italian
League once. Perhaps Juve hadn't
bribed enough referees that year.
