03 03 2007 Portsmouth 0 Chelsea 2
Well, well, well. Chelsea won 2-0 yet again at Pompey.
We set off around 12 to make sure we got there for the tail end of the United match and were bitterly disappointed...
However, when they did score in the last minute there was no great sense of sadness or loss from the Chelsea fans who
were in great spirits in the Shepherds Crooke. Again, the majority of Pompey fans we came across were good sports
and despite some weird bloke trying to stir up that there had been fighting amongst the fans before the game I
witnessed none of it.
When you go to clubs like this you do tend to get to meet some characters. Inside was a man dressed up in a large, blue
mouse outfit emblazoned with the Portsmouth logo. "Did you get the logo off a Portsmouth towel?" a friend of mine
asked. "Yes", he replied sheepishly.
The away end at Portsmouth is demoralising with facilities that would embarrass a non league club. With the 5.15pm kick
off many fans had been drinking throughout the day. The queues for the toilets were horrendous and to only have one
window serving refreshments was a disgrace. When you try to sing, any chants disappear into the night sky and in the
end most fans just give up. The sooner they refurbish the place, the better.
The game itself was tedious again and for the third season in a row I missed a Chelsea goal as I went to queue for
refreshments before the rush began. And what a bloody goal to miss! However, I did manage to take a magnificent
picture of a cloud which I am very proud of.
The second half commenced just like the first and if it wasn't for some world class saves from Cech, Chelsea could easy
have conceded an equaliser. In the end Kalou eased the pressure with a magnificent finish following a second assist
from Ashley Cole.
Not much else to say really. A solid performance from Chelsea but with the title slipping away it would almost seem a
relief for United to make it mathematically secure. Of course, there is still a chance they may slip up but looking at the
fixture list this seems unlikely: plus, we are presuming that Chelsea will win all their games.
On the plus side, there are still two cups to fight for. How magnificent would it be to win the European Cup or FA Cup on
top of the League Cup. Or have we become too spoilt?
