18 10 2006        Chelsea 1 Barcelona 0
Chelsea's win was so emphatic that 2 or 3-0 would not have been a flattering result.

The first half was a true game of chess. Both teams tried to break the other down. 0-0 was a fair reflection, and at
half-time looked like it would also stand as the final result.

The breakthrough came from Drogba: when playing football in Europe you sometimes need that "goal out of nothing",
and he provided it. Some of the tourists that had managed to get tickets in the West Upper missed the goal as they were
queueing up for their official Chelsea hot dogs. After that the floodgates should have opened.

Essien in particular had a magnificent game. His only error came from a marauding run through the middle of the park.
Instead of passing to strikers in a better position when Chelsea were 3 against 2, for once he shot and was blocked.

This was a magnificent performance by Chelsea. Barcelona had no target man up front and had many playmakers - but
noone to pass the ball too. It almost seemed a case of too many cooks spoiling the broth. Eidur was warmly welcomed
back despite some of his less than complimentary comments about Chelsea when he left the club.

What made the victory sweeter was knowing the media was waiting for us to fall flat on our faces. It was only a week or
so earlier where Chelsea had been accused of trying to make the pitch sandy in order to stop Barca playing their
passing game! Ken Bates would not have settled for such accusations. But that is who Chelsea are run by these days -
a bunch of gutless morons who are more afraid to offend the media than support their fans.

Chelsea must continue this form in Europe. Who knows - if Barca continue to play in this form then maybe it will be
Chelsea and Bremen who finish in the top two places! Now that would be sweet....
