13 09 2006        Chelsea 2 Werder Bremen 0
Group of death my arse!

Only kidding.

Werder Bremen are a good side. I love their kit. For the first time in a long while I watched a Chelsea match sober – and
quite enjoyed it. I even read the programme and the cfcuk fanzine all the way through before the game without having
double vision!

There were a lot more fans than I thought – over 30,000 for game where fans were paying top prices. I guess people
had bought their Champions’ League season ticket just to watch Barcelona and thought they may as well attend the
Bremen game. Funnily enough I was inundated with offers from people with spares but I had already bought mine… it’s
all about timing.

Chelsea started off on fire – the passing was crisp and sharp but then tailed away. Bremen looked dangerous in attack
and their left back, Wome, was a real nuisance down our right. He split the defence apart with one run but shot weakly.
Essien was superb, and deserved his goal. In the second half Jose pushed Essien more to the right to combat the threat
from their left-sided attacker and Chelsea’s attacks became more dangerous as Bremen panicked. Lampard should
have won a penalty for being hacked down in the box… and then the referee gave some ridiculous yellow cards to our
players but only one to Bremen guys who had done exactly the same thing.

We finally got our penalty as the excellent Drogba was pushed as he tried to win a header. Ballack’s penalty was tucked
away with aplomb, and we could breathe a sigh of relief.

I sat in the MHL for the game – I love sitting there because of the atmosphere, and would have my season ticket there if
it wasn’t for the fact that all decent seats are taken. What did piss me off were the tosspots singing the “two World Wars
and one World Cup” song among others. Having been to Germany over the summer for the World Cup where we were
made warmly welcomed such chants really bore me. And why do people sing the “10 German bombers in the Air”? The
chorus goes, “and the RAF from Chelsea shot one down…”. Eh? What next, Chelsea landed on the Moon? Chelsea
invented the wheel? A moronic chant – and people ridicule the “Only fools and Horses” song which at least has some
relevance to the club.

Anyway I am really looking forward to another season in Europe. Away trips are fantastic with the real Chelsea fans
there. I am looking forward to Levski Sofia the most and Barcelona the least (mainly because of their animosity towards
us). It’s bound to be carnage.

Anyway – a good Chelsea performance yesterday – bring on the Scouse bastards – you can’t buy points at Stamford
Bridge you know!
