15 03 2006        £2.8 million loss on Smertin - pay for it with hiked ticket prices
So Alexei Smertin, an excellent player who never complained and was always consistent at whichever club he was at,
was sold yesterday for a paltry sum of £1 mio.

He is by no means the best player in the world, but he fitted in well at Chelsea and scored a couple of memorable goals.
At Portsmouth, he was their best player, and also a huge influence in Charlton's good run this season.

He had one year left on his contract... i.e. still another season, and yet we have let him go for just £1 mio.

This is an absolute disgrace. Chelsea has the gall to make fans pay through the nose for football games, but yet again
make losses in the transfer market. What kind of salesmen do we have at the club? Because we are Chelsea we pay for
players through the nose, but do not have the guts to maximise our returns when selling them on. I promise you that in
any other business the person in charge of such dealings would have been sacked by now.

Scott Parker, arguably Newcastle's best player at the moment, was sold for a £3.5 mio loss. Newcastle have the money
to afford him so make them pay for it!

Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink was sold on a free when we could have got at least a million for him! And the night I type this it
was his goal that helped Middlesbrough get through to the next round of the UEFA Cup.

Our season ticket sales from non corporate fans bring revenue to the club of around £15 mio per year. Next year
season ticket prices look like they are going up. If Chelsea continues to write off money on players we sell on, I would
not be surprised if season ticket prices will double in a couple of years time.

People may argue that Smertin is not worth £3.8 mio now with only a year left on his contract. But he is more than a
million pound player, especially when you see transfer fees this season of far inferior players: Pandiani £3 mio; Kroldrup
£5 mio; Luque £9.5 mio; etc.

So come on Chelsea, get some decent people in charge of transfers at the club. Make the most out of players we sell
on, and don't get ripped off by clubs who think they can inflate their prices just because Roman's in town! Most players
would be extremely miffed if their chance to join Chelsea was spoilt by a greedy club chairman wanting an extra £2 mio.

Finally, how dare Chelsea's administration try to justify increasing ticket costs. I do not want to be paying the price (quite
literally!) for incompetence from people at the club whom I have no control over!
