04 03 2006 Boing, boing, dive
Well today was certainly interesting. It's the first time I have taken the train to Brum since I normally drive. And what a
good laugh it was. Getting up for another odd kick off time - 12.45pm k.o. Four out of our next ten games are not normal
Saturday 3pm kick-offs and those remaining are still subject to change!
So a 7am start and first beer at 8.30am. Arrived at Euston and as per usual the Virgin staff had no idea whether the
train I was about to board was going to Birmingham New Street or not. Some things never change. So we went to the
Square Peg for a few beers and a sing song - a bit strange with the pub being a Wetherspoon's - but hilarious none the
less. Chelsea took their full allocation as per usual and there were many fans looking for spares.
We headed to The Hawthorns on the tram. When we came out we were met by lovely bright sunshine.
Chelsea fans put in great efforts to produce pamphlets to hold up during the minute's silence which was immaculately
observed.
"Born is the King of Stamford Bridge" must have been sung around ten times during the day, albeit very few times from
the actual proper start of the song.
The less said about the first half the better. As per usual, even though I went downstairs to get a beer five minutes
before half time there was no way I was going to get served. That is one of the worst away ends for service in the
Premier League.
Jose seemed to have stuck a rocket up Chelsea's arse at the interval, and soon after the break Drogba scored a great
goal. Then Robben was sent off from what seemed a pretty poor tackle. Chelsea rallied and after some ... how can I put
it... er... sublime skill from Drogba, Joe Cole hit the back of the onion bag with another important goal. Drogba had an
excellent second half and even had time to fit in his dying swan act after being fouled. West Brom pulled one back and
seemed to have two good penalty appeals turned down. Having spoken to some people it appears both were dives. I
hope Sky Sports News and Sky News replay these incidents fifty times a day until next December. They will more likely
concentrate on the Robben sending off and Mourinho snubbing Robson after the match after the ex-Manchester United
captain allegedly called him a "fucking faggot".
West Brom fans are a nice enough bunch, but seem to turn into complete muppets once the game begins. The usual
"Where were you when you were shit?" song came up. I refer to an answer I gave earlier, but just to emphasise West
Brom's attendances perhaps they should check here before mouthing off. 15,000 averages up until 2001 anyone? We
left with the Baggies fans next to us chanting, "cheats, cheats, cheats". They must feel pretty stupid now.
So three points again, and six wins required to retain the league. Thoughts turn to Barcelona now, and if we play like we
did in the first half today, I am jumping out of the top tier of the Nou Camp with no parachute.
