01 03 2006 R.I.P. Peter Osgood
"Peter Osgood, twice an FA Cup winner with Chelsea and Southampton, has died at the age of 59 while attending a
funeral at Slough Crematorium. Osgood, capped four times by England between 1970 and 1974, collapsed in the
chapel and was taken to Wexham Park Hospital where he was pronounced dead."
What a sad day for Chelsea fans.
In a career that spanned 16 years, Peter Osgood made 560 appearances for Chelsea and Southampton, scoring 220
goals and winning 2 FA Cup winners medals. During the 69-70 season, Peter achieved the distinction of being the top
scorer in the First Division with 31 goals and also scored in every round of the FA Cup, including the final. He was a
member of the England World Cup Squad in Mexico and played in the victorious Chelsea team that beat Real Madrid
in the ‘71 European Cup Winners Final.
I never saw Osgood play as I was only born in 1979. However, it is obvious what a hero he is to all Chelsea fans.
He was my father's favourite player. His name is still chanted from the stands even though his last game for us was in
1979!
Ossie loved Chelsea, and carried out functions at the Bridge often. This despite the fact that Ken Bates had treated ex-
players very shoddily in his time as chairman at the club. He even had his own official website where he would express
his passionate views about the club. We saw him meander through the Chelsea Hotel many a time and my main regret
is that I never spoke to him.
Let's sing on Saturday for him at West Brom.
R.I.P. Peter Osgood, and wholehearted condolences to his family.
